The Bathroom

So…what’s with women going to the bathroom together? Are we scared we are going to be abducted? Maybe we think the mirrors in the bathroom are trick ones and we need our friends to tell us if our hair looks OK [as if they are going to tell us the truth anyway].
OK…let’s be honest. It is actually just because we need a couple minutes to get away, check in, and see where we are at
“OK, what do you think of him? Do you think it is going OK? How do we get OUT of this? How cute is that guy at the next table? What time do you think the bouncer gets off?” [just kidding…we never think about anyone but our date!]

…and can men do the same thing? Or is that weird? And why is it weird when they go to the bathroom together? Is it cause they don’t have stalls?

Generally we use the time when the girls are in the bathroom to get our witty, urbane, and erudite conversation out of the way so that we can return to being sufficiently immature/awkward when they get back. We know you don't want to hear any of that witty erudite crap.

Actually, I was in the little boys' room of a restaurant a while back and heard two guys having exactly the kind of conversation you describe: how it was going, what the other guy thought of her, whether the other guy's girlfriend approved, how their social circles would mesh, etc., etc. It was actually pretty surprising - the last thing I expected from two drunk skinheads in muscle shirts.

You don't believe me? How can I make you believe me? Shall I rub your arm?

Sheesh.

Fine, I'll admit, my friends and I talk about the same thing that the girls do when they're in the bathroom.

so are guys secretly relieved when the girls venture to the bathroom because that is the time you can talk about us?

just speaking for myself, i use that time with the fellas to talk about sports. and if the guys at the table don't do sports talking, i wait until the females get back for my next conversation entry...

(unless of course i was talking sports with the women before they left, and then, i would follow them into their bathroom to continue the conversation...)

I was on a multi-date with 3 couples and I didn't know the two girls. Well mid-dinner the 2 girls needed to go to the bathroom and I didn't. It was going to be an awkward encounter and I really didn't have to go to the bathroom. I politely passed and my buddy Jarod looked over and said, "uhh aren't you going to go? I mean, girls always go together." I simply said I didn't have to go. So when the girls left....the table was left in silence. So after 2 long minutes of that, I decided oh what the heck-I'll go to the bathroom. So when we came back the guys had clearly been laughing, talking and relieved that I did end up going away. What they talked about-not sure.

I'd say stalls have a lot to do with it. Girls go to the bathroom together to bond, and share lipstick. :)

okay, this is funny because my knee-jerk reaction at reading the question-out-of-the-starting-block was "C'mon - YOU know why we do that - TO CHECK IN!!"
It's all about the check-in.
